Honey IV's story
When Honey IV was brought to the shelter, staff was afraid that humane euthanasia was going to be the vet's recommendation. Her neck was shredded beyond belief and she had other scars which indicated that she had been used as a bait dog in illegal dog fighting. Dr. Susan Narby assessed Honey and determined that she could be saved and would make a full recovery. However, the expense and time would be immense. She was stitched and had drains in the wounds to drain the infection. Three times a day staff had to put compresses on her wounds, make sure the drains were clear, and she had to be given medications and topical treatments even after the drains were removed. Her recovery was a long one. Her first few weeks were ones of fear. She didn't trust humans anymore and her trust had to be regained. Through her care she began to show expressions of happiness instead of fear and doubt while staff was tending to her. She has now fully recovered and was even taken in by a family for Christmas. She is now playful and happy. However, she still is having a difficult time trusting people and needs a permanent home where an experienced dog owner is willing to work with her over time to acclimate her to a family lifestyle.
